Meander Centre for oncological care, Amersfoort
In 2021, Meander Medical Centre Amersfoort was given its own centre for oncological care, a special clinic for all oncological conditions. This brought the philosophy behind the original design of the hospital, 'people first', a step closer. Where previously these specialisms were scattered around the hospital, forcing patients to go to different departments, they are now housed in one clinic.
The new Centre for oncological care is located on the quiet park side, on the 1st floor of the former psychiatry building from 2013. It consists of a living room with access to the hospital park, mammography diagnostics and consultation and examination rooms.
Atelier PRO, also architect of the original building, was able to convince the Meander with a vision on a 'healing environment', by creating a quiet, homely and familiar place. Thanks to daylight, space, contact with greenery and good logistics, people can feel at ease here. We also use colour to support the homely atmosphere in the oncology centre and to make the departments recognisable.
The clinic has several departments: The diagnostics department is recognisable by its yellow hues. This creates a warm and intimate atmosphere for people who come here, always anxious, for examination and diagnosis. The treatment and aftercare department has a different character: here, the use of green shades has created a healing environment for the patients. The park-like environment is extended, as it were, into the interior and privides at the same time liveliness and a sense of space.
In applying the colour we took advantage of a special feature of the existing building: while in existing buildings we are usually restricted to the walls for applying colour due to the use of suspended ceilings, this former psychiatry building has smooth ceilings. This allowed us to apply the colour to the ceilings rather than the walls.
Central to the waiting room is the living room, where patients can meet and talk to each other. With this design, we strive for a balance between a homely and a hospital environment, in line with Meander's vision in which much attention is paid to personal control and supportive, non-medical care.
