The New Way of Working

Interior Police Academy Apeldoorn

Based on restoration, renovation and expansion, atelier PRO transformed the former Roman Catholic small seminary in Apeldoorn (1935) by architect Jan van Hardeveld into a training institute for the police. The renewed design has shown great respect for this national monument and for the surrounding landscape. For example, restoring later interventions brought back the original beauty of the building. In addition, a new program and new requirements led to transformation and expansion. New construction is realized next to the old building and the parking facilities have been concentrated. The landscape is restored thanks to, among other things, the demolition of later outbuildings.

The original color scheme is restored in the architecture. These were based on nature, such as sand, earth and leafy green, and had, here and there, a sparkle with richer accents. The chapel has a mixture of earthly - wood and masonry - and sacral - sky blue glaze - materials and colors.

The original ocher-colored glazed tile line has appeared in the corridors with the removal of white spraying on the sand-colored tile paneling. The walls above are painted sand white. The oregon pine and oak doors, which were painted white in a later renovation, have also been restored to their original state. All new interventions were made in anthracite-colored steel, which 'engages' with the original building.

In the interior too, the original warm colors have been used for the new elements, which are themselves sleek and modern, with an accent here and there. The client were keen on that the design of the workplace layout and the special interior elements would also be filled in by the architects. A sophisticated plan offers the optimum between the possibilities of the existing and new spaces and the desire to introduce The New Way of Working - less location-bound where possible - where introduced. Building and interior have thus become a whole.
