The highest step

Dutch trademagazine Bouwen met Staal (constructions in steel) has published an extensive article about the spiral stairs of Lumion Amsterdam. Lumion Amsterdam is a comprehensive school established in a listed monument at the Vlaardingenlaan in Amsterdam. The renovated school, designed by atelier PRO, was completed in June 2019.

 

Highest step
The steel cantilevered spiral staircase was designed by atelier PRO and came about in close collaboration with Van Rossum Raadgevende Ingenieurs. It is not simply a staircase, but an icon expressing the statement Lumion Amsterdam wanted to make, to achieve a 'wow' effect. In the article project architect Martijn de Visser and senior advisor Ewoud Bruinsma from Van Rossum, tell the story about the design and construction process of this 'highest step'.
