The shape of this location is erratic. The complex responds to this by means of omnipotence and plasticity. The building cannot be seen at a glance due to the angular distortions, overhangs and the alternation of surfaces with regular windows versus windows of varying sizes. On the other hand, the senior complex that forms a composition with the Station is a rectangular volume. There is a clear route from the Sassche center to the new complex. This route ends in the central heart, 'the window'. By means of a line of sight, the slanted senior complex on the Canadalaan is visible from here.
The window covers two floors with various facilities adjacent to it. This central heart is an important part of the complex, where users and visitors can see and meet each other. From this point of view, the aim was to achieve a high degree of synergy. Even when drawing up the Program of Requirements, a lot of research was done into the dual use of spaces and the convergence of the various visitor groups. For example, the community center's meeting room has been combined with the library's reading room. The canteen for athletes is also positioned here. A continuous space has been created with places for the various users. The synergy was enhanced because atelier PRO also carried out the assignment for the interior.
As a nod to Zeeland's beautiful traditional barns, the facade of De Statie consists of covered, black wooden parts. Wide, white-framed windows alternate with narrow vertical windows. A bay window sticks out in one spot. Given its residential function, the senior complex connects to the Sassche houses and is built in a light stone.
The schools are well ventilated and have the Fresh Schools Level B label. A thermal energy roof in combination with a CHP will ensure that the user's energy bill will be low.
De Statie falls under a “total engineering” assignment, where the advisors fell under the coordination of atelier PRO. Our assignment started with the preparation of a PVE. After designing a VO, tenders were then placed on DO+ (instead of traditional tendering at the specification level). Atelier PRO also took care of the management.
De Statie won the second prize of the 2014 'Zeeland Day of Architecture Award'. Via Facebook, people could submit projects and, of course, like them.
