Sustainable reuse of your own design

Making an office building from 2001, which was already sustainable at the time, further sustainable and transforming it into a contemporary workplace concept — that's what we, as architects for developer EDGE, did with the Forum complex in Amsterdam; in doing so, we reused existing building parts and materials as much as possible. What makes the assignment completely special is that the building was also originally designed by atelier PRO. The complex has been transformed into EDGE Stadium, a modern and inspiring work environment with space for startups and small businesses - a conscious mix that promotes collaboration and innovation. EDGE Stadium is a green and healthy office, with natural materials, lush plants, high air quality and a wide roof terrace. Due to its location, near the Zuidas and the Olympic Stadium, the building is right in the middle of the life of the city, but also in the business heart of Amsterdam.

A green and inspiring interior

EDGE consists of two long office wings, which have been widened and topped with an additional floor. In this way, the surface area of the building has been increased by 30%. The central atrium that lies between these two wings has been preserved, expanded and given a new look; it has been redesigned as a lush green space where users can meet, and is therefore the heart of the building. This is the place where people can come together, exchange ideas and inspire each other, in an environment full of plants, space and light. The pavilion in the back wall was subsequently dismantled, expanded and provided with a new façade; the heart-shaped, copper-clad pavilion at the front was recognisably integrated and is now an eye-catcher in the new atrium.

Circular and biobased transformation

Because the building already met a large part of the requirements, many elements of the existing building could be reused and upgraded. For example, the original wooden columns and beams found their way into a riding hall near a riding school; the copper from the pavilion in the back wall of the atrium has also been reused elsewhere. All the original wooden fronts between the office wings and the atrium have been removed, stored and replaced in the new design, so that all interior facades are circular. The same applies to the exterior facades: when the atrium was modified, the glass exterior facades were removed in a number of places and then reused in the construction of the office wings — so only a small amount of new natural stone was needed here. Biobased wood was deliberately chosen for the construction of the topping. The furniture in the atrium also comes from a circular source.

Sustainability through technology and design

However, the sustainability of the design lies not only in the design, but also in issues such as the plants and the installations; smart technological measures play an important supporting role here. The installations have been renewed and adapted to current requirements; heat/cold storage - for heating and cooling - which was quite unique at the time - was already used in 2001; the current design builds on this. The highest standards - BREEAM Excellent and WELL Platinum - have been maintained for sustainability. The building is also the first R2S (Ready2Services) -certified two-star building in the Netherlands; this label weighs a building's “smart connectivity”, or performance through smart technology.

A social and healthy office

The EDGE Stadium atrium is used for more than just work: it's also a place where outside people can meet for a good cup of coffee or a healthy lunch. Outside office hours, the space is regularly used for special events - workout sessions, silent discos, orchestral rehearsals; this is how EDGE Stadium provides vibrancy in a 'quiet' part of the city. The building is designed to encourage social interaction, but is also designed to encourage people to exercise more — after all, it is also a healthy building; new, attractive stairwells provide natural routing, elevators are secondary to these stairs, and there is even a meeting room with a walking floor. The natural materials, bright tall spaces and many plants contribute to the mental health of the users. This is how, on all fronts, a 'better' building has been created.

#theworldneedsbetterbuildings

Dorte Kristensen, architect director of atelier PRO: “As architects, we have to take responsibility for what we design. We need to build better, with an eye for people, the Earth and the future. This means that we do not simply opt for a new building, unless it is strictly necessary. Our work is much more about the reuse and sustainability of existing buildings and materials. It also requires designing contemporary, healthy and innovative environments, with lots of greenery and great places where people can meet each other, where connections are made. That's where we and client EDGE found each other, making “our old Forum complex” — again — ready for the future, now as an EDGE workspace.”
