Zeeland is shrinking: the population is declining, the number of births is declining. But the province is shrinking mainly because the children from Zeeland are leaving to study elsewhere and not coming back. Their parents stay and are getting older. Zeeland is therefore the most aging province in the Netherlands, according to Camelea Buys of the NOS in August 2015. So a lot of demand for care but at the same time knowing that it will shrink there too in the long term. So how do you approach making a hospital operational again?
The hospital on the Koudekerkseweg has been renovated into a clinic for scheduled care, diagnostics, two operating rooms, imaging techniques, outpatient clinics and day treatment.
A third of the existing hospital has been demolished. As a result, the real estate costs have been drastically reduced and, at the same time, the routing and appearance have been 'unruled'. One third of the hospital has been completely renovated. This way, the most important care functions for West-Walcheren will be maintained. The renovation is in line with current insights into plannable medical care. And a third part, finally, can be rented out as offices if there is a demand but will be mothballed until then.
The hospital was able to remain in operation during the work.
The revitalization was made financially possible by crowdfunding. A first in the Dutch hospital world. Read about this on the ZIB Crowdfunding website.
The new building at the front of the existing building gives the hospital a new face. With a relatively small intervention to stay in medical terms, the routing has been arranged and an overview and insight are created.
The large glass surfaces provide plenty of daylight, even right into the middle of the renewed bed section. The new garden in the original patio not only provides a pleasant atmosphere, but also plays a role in orientation inside. From the central meeting point, both patients and visitors can reach all departments in an easy and pleasant way.
Where the existing situation was characterized by pavement and parking, green dominates in the new situation. The garden is decorated with various types of grass. Existing trees are preserved and have been supplemented with new ones.
To create paths for pedestrians from the Koudekerkseweg and for the kiss & ride and taxi stop, pavement was installed in the garden. The garden will not be parked by staff or visitors.
The garden is the green gateway to the renovated hospital and the existing ZRTI radiotherapy center.
