The location is part of a green area around Warmond that includes buildings more loosely than in the village center. Atelier PRO is in line with this by giving the new part of the Beating Heart a free, wavy shape. The wavy shape consists of a “string of beads” of classrooms that is flexible. The shrinkage and growth of schools can easily be absorbed by sliding the 'beads' (classrooms). This flexibility has already proven itself: originally three primary schools were going to move into the building; two schools merged smoothly before opening.
The existing and the new of the Beating Heart are connected by a central space. This creates a space between old and new that can be used multifunctionally; as a meeting room, as a learning space, as a playground, etc.
In the existing meeting center, the interventions are limited but focused. The narrow foyer has been enlarged and the accessibility and appearance of spaces has been improved. In addition, the building will be made suitable for dual use by primary schools as much as possible. For example, the schools are making use of the renewed library and the handyroom. And the youth box has been made suitable as a playroom for toddlers.
According to the Municipality: “Atelier PRO excelled on a few points. They come up with an appealing idea to incorporate the new building into the area. The ideas proposed to solve the infrastructural challenges and the way in which the existing Meeting Point is deployed on the new building also appealed to us. Atelier PRO also scored well on the subject of sustainability.”
From alderman Kees van Velzen's speech at the opening:
“The building is beautifully integrated into a historic location, the historic heart of Warmond. Due to its playful shapes and good use of materials, it fits perfectly into the environment.”
