The new Oncological Care Center is located on the 1st floor of the former Meander Medical Center psychiatry building — designed by atelier PRO in 2013. It consists of a living room with access to the adjacent park, as well as the departments for diagnostics, treatment and aftercare. Previously, these specialties were spread across the hospital, so patients had to make a stressful 'journey' through different departments to get the care they needed.
The new clinic was designed from the Meander Medical Center's vision: “People are at the center”. The center of the clinic is the living room, where patients and peers can meet and talk to each other. The adjacent park is emotionally extended into the interior of the living room, providing vibrancy and a sense of space.
Color plays an important role, and not only in making the different departments visible; after all, different colors provide a different “mindset”. The reception and the diagnostics department are recognisable by their shades of yellow. This creates a warm and intimate atmosphere for people who come here, always tense, for research and diagnosis. The treatment and aftercare department has a different character: here, using green tones, a soothing, natural atmosphere has been created for patients.
When applying the colors, a special feature of the existing building was used: because smooth ceilings were installed instead of suspended ceilings, we were able to apply the chosen colors to the floors, walls and ceilings for the oncology center.
With the design, we were looking for a balance between a home and a medical environment that fits Meander's vision, where a lot of attention is paid to self-direction and supportive, non-medical care. “People at the center”.
